Fathers Day: Hungry Horse Reservoir part 1 of 2.

Father's Day. This Father's Day I decided to do something different. I decided that I would take my father fishing. My father and I have not been fishing together for well over a decade. I don't think he has handled a rod in that long. Also along for the trip, my wonderful mother, my brother Scott, his wife Katie, and my youngest niece Erin. Oh. And Hopkins the dog that doesn't like water. This was also the first time we had been fishing together as a family in 15 years. Great trip. Location: East shore of the Hungry Horse Reservoir. I want to go again...

A little snow in the hills yet. Looking East. The water level in the lake is higher then normal. Being a reservoir, they typically let out a lot of water to accommodate spring run-off. There was a little more then average snow fall in the mountains this year, however the full status of the lake is more due to government regulations on how much electricity can be produced and how much water can be allowed down stream...also at their peak. All in all, it is great to see the lake almost full. Most years it is 15 to 30 feet shallower.

Me, not catching fish. I brought along the casting rod. Good thing too. The wind was blowing directly into shore and was a bit strong for fly fishing. Not catching fish is much funner then catching trees, yourself, the dog, your father ect ect. Not a good shot.

A lone stalk of Bear Grass. Great stuff, Bear Grass. Parts of it are even edible during the spring before they flower. They smell good too. But they also start to stink once the flowering process starts to die down.

Hopkins the dog and his trusty ball. He wouldn't go into the water to get the ball though.

There are so many things wrong with this picture. It was all I could do not to run the other way, close my eyes, take the hatchet away from her or just pray. But at the end of the day all fingers and toes made it into the car, firmly attached even if slightly punctured by various splinters and abrasions. Erin, my youngest niece.

I so have a thing for fire. Its a miracle I haven't burned off all my hair yet. Oh wait....I have. It grows back thankfully.

An Osprey fishing. I didn't expect him to actually catch anything though. He definitely had different Ideas.

I can't tell if this is a Cutthroat Trout or a trout minnow (squaw fish). Either way though, this Osprey certainly showed me a thing or two. It was a great scene. The wind was blowing so hard he almost didn't make it to shore. He kept trying to circle higher, but the weight of the fish and the wind kept pushing him down to the water. Too bad I missed the splashdown. It was lucky to have just gotten this shot off. This is reason 5,347 as to why I hope to never leave Montana again.

Feasting on his catch. Despite the size of the fish, he had it shredded, eaten and was back on the wing in less then ten minutes. Great memory.

Father's Day Part 2. Hungry Horse Reservoir

Part two of the Father's Day fishing trip. Even though we didn't really catch any fish and I personally was skunked, it still was fun. The weather held, the temperatures were great, wildlife was plentiful and all in all it was yet again, another perfect day.

I am addicted to fire. There is no way around it. Pyromania runs deep in my veins. Note the exploding pitch pocket on the lower right hand side of the frame.

If you stare at this long enough, you might see the coals and embers flicker.

A little smoke never hurt no one.

And more flames. Fire is mankind's savior and yet it is still one of our greatest fears.

More Bear Grass. This time taken in low light with a high flash. Fascinating plants.

From Below

Packing up, putting the fire out and getting ready to head out. Dusk was crashing down upon us and its a long drive back.

This was a fun excursion. Happy Father's Day. (Two days late)

Starvation Lake

So, I guess I have to officially say that I am back in Whitefish. Its good to be back, and as long as the employment opportunities hold strong, soon to be back in action and getting back to the American Dream.

The photos below consist of my last days of my last month in Utah. My brother-in-law Kevin, my two oldest nieces and I took the opportunity of the good weather and the weekend to go for a short boating trip. Along for the ride was Keshley, Kacie's friend, Jake and Maddie. Location: Starvation Reservoir, Central Utah. This lake is located just east of the Wasatch mountain range in the high desert. The water was cool, the weather was perfect and all in all it turned out to be a fun day on the lake. Here are a couple of photos along the way.

Water! Can you tell that Jake likes water?

After about half an hour of doggy paddling around the boat, chasing splashes and trying to drown his big sister Maddie, Jake decides that its time to climb back in the boat.

Tubing. I guess Jake is the official spotter...

Kelsey, reigning supreme as king of the lake.

Kacie and Keshley. Do you think they are having fun?

More of Kelsey, ripping up the lake

An interesting, but decidedly dead juniper bush in the desert

I found a small gully full of these very soft eroded sandstone boulders. I even managed to drag one back to Montana with me. The joys of being a rock hound...

"Ok, so first you toss me in the back of the truck and drive me for two hours down the road with an obnoxious, hyperactive spaniel named Jake...then you throw me in a boat and drag me all over this great big lake....and then you have the nerve to throw me in that lake (yes it was fun)...and then you take me out into this really hot and dirty and rocky desert (I am black...and its really really hot!)...are we done yet? Can I go home yet?" If only dogs could speak...

"Oh (insert swear word here)! "

"OH (insert many more swear words here!)" First you say it...then you do it. And people wonder why I don't get on those silly things...

"That was fun! I think I even got water behind my eye balls"

Can we say white? Yes that's me. Yes I am out of shape. Yes I am white. Yes I got sunburned. Yes it was fun!

Hairy! You can hardly tell that Kevin just spent the last 10 days in the Caribbean...

Thunderstorm brewing in the background. This was the end of the trip. Lightening and boaters do not get along.
